A kingfisher moves through the centre of this piece, small and steady above the water. Brown trout shift beneath the surface. Around them, a river world of trailing willow, lily pads, lilies and dense layered green holds everything in a kind of ordered wildness. The old legend says the winds were stilled for seven days so the kingfisher could nest safely on the water. That stillness is here, but it is earned, not given.

This is a piece that suits a room where you want to feel grounded. A reading corner, a hallway, a bedroom wall that catches the morning light. It rewards a second look and a third.

Artwork Story

I made this during an unsettled time. Not a crisis exactly, more the feeling of standing in moving water and not quite knowing where to put your feet. I needed something to draw that held its nerve, and that is how the kingfisher found its way in.

The kingfisher has an old name: the halcyon. In the ancient legend, Alcyone and her husband Ceyx are transformed into kingfishers, and every winter the winds fall still for seven days so she can nest safely on the water. That is where the phrase comes from. A calm that arrives inside the hardest season rather than waiting for it to pass.

The piece shows the bird moving above the river, brown trout below, the whole world of it layered and growing and carrying on. I wanted it to feel like growth that does not pause for permission. The kingfisher does not wait for still water. It dives.

This artwork is made by Andrea using a mix of hand techniques and digital work. Parts are monoprinted in ink, pressed by hand to hold the weight and texture of the original mark. These monoprinted sections are layered with fragments of old maps and printed pages, and drawn into with a digital stylus and tablet, the linework holding the whole piece together.

All sizes are professionally produced as fine art giclée prints on high quality, archival cotton paper, chosen for its soft texture, depth, and ability to hold detail and tone beautifully. Framed artworks are finished using high quality frames in white, black, or natural wood, each paired with an off white mount for a clean, balanced, and timeless presentation.
