This piece began with a memory of my daughter when she was about six.

She had the most beautiful blonde curls and loved wearing her sparkly dresses, but she was never the kind of child who stayed clean or still for long. No matter what she was wearing, she always ended the day with scuffed knees.

She was always up a tree.

Branches were never something to look at from below, they were something to climb, balance on, sit in, and disappear into for hours. She seemed completely at home there, as though trees were simply part of her world.

This drawing came from remembering those moments, the contrast of a pretty dress catching the light while she climbed higher and higher, completely unconcerned about the state of her knees.

She is in her twenties now and, truthfully, not much has changed. If there is a tree nearby, she will probably still be halfway up it.

For me this piece holds that beautiful spirit of childhood, curiosity, confidence, and the freedom to explore the world without worrying too much about the consequences.
