A crow, standing very still, holding the moment everything changed.

This piece began on a seafront walk, on the edge of a decision that had been waiting a long time to be made. A crow landed, looked, and stayed. It is the kind of moment that doesn't announce itself. You carry it with you afterwards as the place a different life began.

The bird is built from layers of old maps and fragments of printed pages. Not from any particular place, and not from any particular book. They are the idea of a journey, and the idea of a story still waiting to be told. The Journey is about the cusp. The quiet, ordinary, heart-stopping moment of knowing what you already know.

  • Hand drawn digitally using a stylus and tablet, layered with collaged map fragments and pages to build texture, depth, and story
  • A study in stillness and knowing, where the bird becomes the carrier of the journey rather than its subject
  • Quietly powerful, hopeful, and honest about the courage a beginning asks of you
  • Printed as a fine art giclée on softly textured cotton paper to preserve the depth and subtlety of the original artwork
  • Available as a print or professionally framed to bring warmth and story into the home

Artwork Story

This piece began at the edge of a decision I had been carrying for a long time.
I was forty one, and I was on the cusp of whether to stay in the life I was living, which I was not happy in but which felt safe, or to begin a new journey, which was frightening but which felt like living. I think, somewhere underneath, I already knew the answer. My heart was asking me to go.
I was walking along the seafront one day, talking it through with a friend. And a crow landed on my head, and then came down and stood next to me.
I have always liked to think it was my nan. I don't really know. It felt like a message from somewhere. From her, from the universe, from whatever it is that finds you when you need finding. It was the way it looked at me. As if to say, you already know the answer. You know what you're supposed to do. Go and do it.
It was such a short, fleeting moment, and it changed everything.
This piece is built from maps and from fragments of pages, because that is what it felt like. The idea of a journey I had not taken yet, and the story that was waiting to be told. The next chapter.
If you live with this piece, I hope it finds you on a morning when you need it. Maybe you are on the cusp of something of your own. Maybe you are looking back at how far you have already come from a moment like mine. Either way, the story you could tell, the life you could lead, it is all still ahead of you. There is hope in it, and there is challenge in it, and both of those things are true at once.
It is The Journey. And really, it is the journey to transformation.

Where this works beautifully

This piece settles into homes where someone has lived through a moment of change, or is quietly standing on the edge of one. It belongs in a study where decisions get weighed, a bedroom that holds the first thoughts of the morning, or a hallway you walk past every day on the way to something that matters. It is a piece for anyone who has ever stood very still and known the answer before they were ready to say it aloud.

Materials & Finish

This artwork is made by Andrea using a mix of hand techniques and digital work. Parts of the bird are monoprinted in ink, pressed by hand to hold the weight and texture of the original mark. These monoprinted sections are layered with fragments of old maps and printed pages, and drawn into with a digital stylus and tablet, the linework holding the whole piece together.
All sizes are professionally produced as fine art giclée prints on high quality, archival cotton paper, chosen for its soft texture, depth, and ability to hold detail and tone beautifully. Framed artworks are finished using high quality frames in white, black, or natural wood, each paired with an off white mount for a clean, balanced, and timeless presentation.
